Why it’s worth it: Color Wow's Dream Coat Supernatural Spray is beloved for its ability to tame frizz in even the most trying circumstances—think intense workouts, heavy humidity, and complete downpours. It pulls this off through heat-activated polymers, which wrap around each strand to create a protective coating that repels moisture, leaving a sleek, smooth texture that should last you between three and four washes. (Note that since these polymers are heat-activated, you do have to blow-dry your hair to reap the benefits of this product; fortunately, it also offers heat protection.)

The ingredients list also includes chamomile extract, which provides color protection, and glycerin for moisture and additional shine. Allure contributor Jessica Chia raved about this Best of Beauty Award winner's ability to weatherproof her hair. "It's the closest thing I’ve ever found to a raincoat for my hair," she said. Pro tip: If you're ditching the blow-dryer but still need frizz maintenance, spray on Color Wow's Money Mist Leave-In Conditioner, which doesn't need heat to activate.

“Ah, Dream Coat. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Traveling to a supremely humid environment? Dream Coat. Headed to a dinner and event? Color Wow. Busy week with the kids with zero getting-ready time? Dream Coat. It's always the answer for me. But before we go any further: Rule number one when using the Dream Coat Supernatural Spray is that it's heat-activated. It's not going to do anything if you're not following up with a hot tool. Now that that's out of the way, this is the perfect blow-dry spray for a smooth, bouncy, and shiny blowout. Period, end of story. No product's held a candle to the effect this spray gives. I've had decent alts, but this product packaging also makes a difference: the pump-top is narrow with a circular top that's so easy to push down when your hair is wet, and your hands are sticky with leave-in; the body of the bottle is also nice and narrow so you can easily wrap your hand around it.

Because I use this product (in conjunction with either the Dyson Co-anda brush head or the GHD Duet Blow Dry Brush), people think I get my hair professionally blown out. Nope! The salon-smooth (and bouncy) finish comes from this silver bottle. One tip that really works for me? Getting really good tension with your brush when using this product. The shine is off the charts.” —Shanna Shipin, senior commerce director

"My hair walks the line between wavy and curly, but always errs on the side of wavy (and frizzy) when it needs a hydration reset. When I wake up and my curls are flat and have completely lost their shape like in the photo above, I know it's time for a little extra oomph in the shower, which is where this mask comes in. I use it in place of my conditioner once a week, and always notice refreshed shine and shape after my curls air dry. I wouldn't say I have super damaged hair—I don't heat-style often and haven't colored it in years—but my hair always looks and feels so much healthier after mask day." —Sarah Hoffmann, commerce market editor

Along with frizz control, it targets split ends, provides heat protection, and, for curls and waves, offers light definition and hold. It’s got a creamy consistency that’s pretty rich (a little goes a long way) but won’t weigh down finer hair types, and the mango scent conjures up tropical drinks on the beach. So when it comes to leave-in conditioners, my curls crave something lightweight enough to let them do their thing. What I love about the Rizos 6-in-1 is that, yes, it graciously allows my hair to billow, but it still keeps frizz in check. Reverie’s Milk Anti-Frizz Leave-in Treatment strikes the seemingly impossible balance: It’s “non-greasy and hydrating, without weighing the hair down,” says New York City-based professional hairstylist Tiffani Patchett, who likes its combination of “shea butter, which is incredibly hydrating, and pracaxi oil, which is a natural silicone [that leaves] the hair feeling smooth and glossy,” she says. Frequently Asked Questions

    How does frizz form?

So, what causes our hair to frizz up in the first place, and how do we get it to stop? Frizz happens when the outermost cuticle layer of the hair shaft is out of alignment, creating a jagged look. Multiple factors have an impact on your hair and its texture, but one of the most likely causes is dehydration. Frizzy strands can also form from heat damage, friction, and breakage.

What is the root cause of frizzy hair?

Simply put, frizzy hair is dry or dehydrated hair. When the hair cuticle (that protective outer layer) is lifted, it takes in more of the surrounding moisture and humidity in an effort to balance the moisture levels between the hair and environment. After it takes in that moisture, it swells, appearing to the naked eye as frizz.

And dryness and damage are what lead to that lifted cuticle. Rose and Los Angeles-based hairstylist Chris Russell both cite dehydration; Patchett adds heat and chemical damage to the list. You could also be washing your hair a little too frequently, “especially if you have dry, curly, or textured hair,” says Patchett.

What kind of hair products should I use for frizzy hair?

A frizz-fighting hair routine starts in the shower—namely, with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. You’ll also want to make use of “hair masks, leave-in conditioners, and hair serums; I would suggest using all three if you really want to make sure that you are keeping your hair hydrated,” says Patchett. Ingredients-wise, as New York City-based hairstylist Paul Labrecque previously told Allure, "naturally moisturizing ingredients”—such as shea butter and nut oils—“will smooth the hair shaft but not overly weigh the hair down."

As you move on to styling, Russell recommends using heat protectants and anti-humidity finishing products; indeed, the latter might be the most valuable of all. “If a big cause of frizz is damaged hair, I want to make sure none of my tools are causing more heat damage,” he says. “My clients’ hair depends on me using hot tools intentionally.”

If you’re not heat-styling but still want to target frizz, Atkin says to elevate your post-shower, damp hair regimen with conditioning, moisture-replenishing products. When air-drying, foregoing a wrap altogether is key to minimizing frizz, but if you'd prefer your floors to stay dry, Atkin suggests using a microfiber towel or an old cotton T-shirt to wring out the excess water.

And if the arsenal of products feels a touch overwhelming, there are longer-term options. “If you would like something slightly more permanent, I suggest a smoothing treatment like Lasio [a keratin treatment], which will eliminate frizz, but the hair will still have natural volume and movement,” says Patchett.

What are common mistakes in treating frizz?

    • Getting too touchy-feely: If you decide to air-dry, do your absolute best not to touch your hair after applying your styling products. This can loosen shorter hairs and create friction on the cuticle, causing frizz to form, says Patchett. “Your best bet is to let your hair fully dry before moving it around,” she adds.
    • Being too conservative with products: “People tend to be very reserved with how much product they use,” says Patchett. “I recommend reading the label’s suggestion, starting there, and adding more product depending on your hair density.” Remember, these serums, leave-ins, and oils are crucial for moisture. And consider dampening your hair a quick fix and only that. “Applying water will only temporarily smooth the frizz,” explains Rose. So, if you aren’t locking in that hydration, it will return.
    • Using heat irresponsibly: Since damaged hair can lead to frizz—and heat can lead to damage—always start with a heat protectant and use the lowest possible temperature that will yield the desired results on your hair type. “I want to make sure none of my tools are causing more heat damage,” says Russell. “My priority is moisture first, then protection.”

How we test and review products

We always enlist a range of testers for our makeup vertical, but hair-care products and tools are another story. While there are certain products that can be used across different hair textures, lengths, curl patterns, thicknesses, colors (natural and unnatural), and needs, hair products are often created with specific consumers in mind. Many are created in order to address a concern (dandruff, breakage, brittleness) or to work most effectively for a specific hair type (4C curls, wavy hair, gray hair). You wouldn’t want to pick up a purple shampoo that’s only been reviewed by someone with, say, auburn hair, or a diffuser that’s never been tested by anyone with curls—right?

For our review of the best frizzy hair products, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and hairstylists who all want frizz-minimizing formulations for their own hair-care routines. Testers considered performance across four primary categories: efficacy, texture and experience, fragrance, and packaging. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

It's dark, glossy, long, softly layered, and swept dramatically over to one side in a very deep side part. Sound familiar? That's because it's remarkably reminiscent of the hair she wore in Camp Rock 2.

Demi Lovato in Camp Rock 2Photo: Getty Images

Back then, Lovato's hair was a similarly deep, nearly-black shade, falling well past her shoulders with long, face-framing layers and a firmly established side part that said, “I just left MySpace for Facebook, and I'm ready for my new profile pic.” Her Camp Rock 3 premiere version keeps those same essential ingredients: the color, the comparable length, the cascading layers, and—most importantly—that part. But it’s a considerably more grown-up look.

Demi Lovato wearing a bronze dressPhoto: Getty Images

Her makeup is polished, with darkly, fully lined eyes, softly sculpted cheeks, and a glossy, rosy lip with contoured edges. The sleekness of her hair also gives the side part a more intentional, glamorous quality rather than making it feel like she just stepped out of a 2010 tutorial.

Kevin Jonas Nick Jonas Demi Lovato Joe JonasPhoto: Getty Images

And then there's the fit. Lovato wore a bronze dress with a fitted, ruched silhouette and corset-inspired detailing, giving the entire look a decidedly not-teenage feel, making it clear that this wasn't an attempt to recreate Mitchie exactly as she was.

    It's Mitchie with a mortgage.

Slathering on a rich body butter or shimmer oil is an excellent way to treat your skin—but if you want straightforward moisture, the best drugstore body lotions are hard to beat. After all, they contain a lot of the same nourishing, restorative ingredients as higher-end products. Tried-and-true moisturizers like glycerin and hyaluronic acid? Check. Barrier-bolstering ceramides? Check. Innovative brighteners and exfoliators? At the risk of repeating ourselves, check.

With their derm-approved ingredients and more wallet-friendly prices, these products make it easy to stick to a consistent lotion routine. “Even if your skin doesn't feel dry, regular moisturizing helps maintain the skin barrier,” says Sejal Shah, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City.

    • Best for Eczema: Vanicream Moisturizing Cream, $14
    • Best K-Beauty: Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Lotion, $30

To get the most out of your body lotion, apply it right after getting out of the shower, while your skin is still slightly damp, says Kunal Malik, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. “The moisture is already there, and your lotion's job is simply to seal it in. If you wait until your skin is completely dry, you're starting from a deficit,” he explains. According to Dr. Malik, your skin goes into repair mode while you sleep, so it’s even better if you do your shower-lotion routine in the evening. And that way, you can slide into bed feeling silky-soft (and maybe slightly smug that you’re already ahead of the moisturizing game).

    Jessica Cruel

Why we love it: No wonder one Allure editor called La Roche-Posay’s Lipikar AP+Max Triple Repair Moisturizing Body Cream “the cashmere sweater of moisturizers.” With its balm-like texture, it feels luxurious, but its formula is remarkably simple: It contains hydration heavy-hitters like shea butter and glycerin as well as brightening niacinamide to support the skin barrier and fade brown spots in one fell swoop. It’s also infused with La Roche-Posay’s patented prebiotic thermal water, which supports your skin’s microbiome and soothes inflammation. Both Dr. Shah and Dr. Malik highly recommend this lotion, noting that it’s suitable for sensitive skin, rough patches, and even compromised skin barriers. But don’t worry about it weighing down your skin. While it’s nourishing enough to address eczema and severe winter dryness alike, its fast-absorbing consistency leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth—not greasy.

“I am particular about body lotion. Just like Goldilocks: too thick and it's greasy, too thin and it's useless. This La Roche-Posay formula is just right. I find that it is moisturizing enough to quench my dry elbows and knees. Yet, it doesn't leave me feeling like I am going to slip and slide all over every surface I touch. There is no scent so it's good for sensitive skin types. When I don't use it for a while, I can feel my dry, itchy skin begging for moisture. It's screaming ‘Lipikar, please!’” —Jessica Cruel, editor in chief

    Jesa Marie Calaor

Why we love it: Lubriderm is a go-to for dry, itchy skin, and its Advanced Therapy Lotion is an especially soothing option, thanks in no small part to its pro-ceramide formula. Ceramides fill in the gaps between skin cells, making your skin barrier stronger; that’s key for anyone with sensitive skin—when your skin barrier is healthy and resilient, it’s more resistant to irritation. And, while it locks potential irritants out, it locks moisture in. This lotion also contains panthenol, a.k.a. pro-vitamin B5, which targets inflammation while drawing moisture into the skin. To top it off, it’s made without fragrances, dyes, and other common causes of reactions in sensitive skin—so your skin stays calm in the short- and long-term.

“I've been using Lubriderm lotion since I was a small child. It helps keep my sensitive skin soft and moisturized all day until I reapply it the next day post-shower. I use it all over, from my face (when my regular moisturizer isn't within reach) all the way down to the bottoms of my feet.” —Jesa Marie Calaor, senior beauty editor

Why we love it: Niacinamide, or vitamin B3, is the MVP in Vaseline’s Pro VitaB3 Serum Burst Lotion, addressing dullness, hyperpigmentation, and inflammation all at once. The brand’s antioxidant complex further brightens your skin and protects it from common effects of environmental stressors—think dark spots, dehydration, and signs of aging. Finally, it wouldn’t be a Vaseline product without a little petrolatum, an occlusive that seals in moisture, but not to the point that you feel like a slug. This lotion feels impressively lightweight, with a serum-like consistency that blends easily into the skin and leaves a soft finish behind.

The main reason: The ‘Serum-Burst Lotion’ is the perfect labeling for this ultra-lightweight, ultra-fast-absorbing formula—I never feel sticky afterwards. (Did I mention I hate heavy lotions? Yup, good time to mention that.) Why we love it: Korean skin-care aficionados and newbies alike will love Illiyoon’s Ceramide Ato Lotion, a deeply hydrating option that’s gentle enough to use on your face. It absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving zero residue or grease behind, but trust that it’s working around the clock: This is another lotion with a time-release, encapsulated ceramide system that provides sustained hydration for hours. It also contains soybean oil for softer skin and antioxidant-rich rosemary leaf extract for its anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also available as a more intensive cream, so you can enjoy the formula year-round, even during harsh, drying winters.

“This is my mainstay lotion—I have three in the house at any given time (one for my room, one for my girls’ room, one for the bathroom). It’s all very necessary, and you’ll understand once you start to use this lotion. Illiyoon managed to make a lotion that’s airy and lightweight, but it has substance. It immediately seeps into the skin right after a shower, or quells angry, itchy flare-ups at the end of your day, leaving no hint of greasy residue. You know that feeling of sticky, oily lotion transferring onto your bedsheets or pants? The worst! But there’s none of that here. It’s why both of my kids (who have eczema, like me) prefer this lotion over anything else. It’s also the little things about this lotion: It’s fragrance-free, the pump-top is a big round circle (like a target you can’t miss), and one extra-special feature is that you can get every last drop. Why we love it: Don’t let CeraVe’s Daily Moisturizing Lotion’s lightweight, non-greasy texture fool you—it’s a hydration powerhouse that’s “packed with ceramides to help support the skin barrier and hyaluronic acid to help retain moisture,” Dr. Shah says. It uses multivesicular emulsion (MVE) technology (a system that slowly delivers water, fatty oils, and ceramides to the skin) to steadily release its moisturizing ingredients throughout the day. Rather than getting immediate relief, only to find that your skin feels thirsty again in an hour, you’ll get continuous hydration with this formula. Dr. Malik also notes that it works well with pretty much any skin type, even if your skin is prone to inflammation, clogged pores, or severe dryness. Even if you don’t mind the feel of regular lotion, a gel-cream product like this one may feel more pleasant during the summertime, Dr. Shah says. “Hyaluronic acid-based, [this lotion] absorbs almost instantly [and] leaves no residue,” Dr. Malik notes. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it works by pulling in additional moisture and holding it in the skin. This lotion is a great pick for normal or oily skin, but if your skin is especially dry, you’ll probably get more relief from a richer, more heavy-duty product.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the #1 dermatologist-recommended drugstore lotion?

CeraVe’s body lotions and creams are frequent favorites among derms, including Dr. Shah and Dr. Malik. Their formulas are streamlined, non-greasy, and contain limited irritants, so they’re considered suitable for most skin types and concerns. Dr. Malik also frequently recommends La Roche-Posay’s Lipikar AP+Max Triple Repair Moisturizing Body Cream, especially for those with very dry or sensitive skin.

Which body lotion is best for older skin?

It’s better to look out for certain ingredients rather than specific brands or products when you’re shopping for mature skin-friendly lotions. “As we age, the skin's protective barrier becomes less effective,” Dr. Shah explains. “The skin produces less oil, becomes thinner, and loses moisture more easily, making dryness and irritation more common.”

With that in mind, it’s important to use body-care products that provide immediate moisture and strengthen the skin barrier for less water loss in the future. Ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, lactic acid, shea butter, petrolatum, retinol, and urea (which exfoliates as well as moisturizes the skin) are all solid bets. “While these ingredients can benefit people of any age, they become increasingly important as the skin matures and its natural ability to retain moisture and protect itself declines,” Dr. Shah says.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that's included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best drugstore body lotions, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors — along with special consideration from board-certified dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Why it’s worth it: Moroccanoil's Weightless Hydrating Mask is a deep conditioner for people who normally avoid deep conditioners—namely, anyone with fine hair who knows that “deeply nourishing” can sometimes translate to a heavy formula that zaps all your volume. This one keeps things light, though, starting with its bouncy gel-cream texture. The formula pairs Moroccanoil's signature argan oil with shea butter to nourish and soften dry strands, plus behentrimonium chloride, a conditioning agent that helps reduce static, smooth the hair, and make tangles easier to work through. There’s a strengthening component, too: Hydrolyzed vegetable protein helps improve elasticity in porous or damaged hair, so strands feel stronger.

“My hair is loooong—practically down my back—and because I only get it cut once or twice a year, keeping my dry ends happy is an ongoing project. My strands fall somewhere between fine and medium, and since my natural scalp oils have a hard time making it all the way down there, I concentrate masks mostly from my mid-lengths to ends. I already love the Moroccanoil Treatment Mist and will sometimes practically douse my hair in it as a makeshift mask (though I have to rinse very thoroughly or things can get a little greasy). When I want something lighter, though, I reach for the Weightless Hydrating Mask. It has this bouncy, gel-like texture that reminds me of some of my favorite face moisturizers, absorbs quickly, and leaves my lengths soft and hydrated without dragging them down. My only caveat: It works best on towel-dried hair, which means getting out of the shower to apply it and hopping back in to rinse isn't exactly convenient. But when an everything shower is on the agenda, this is the mask I reach for.” —Christa Joanna Lee, contributing commerce writer

Why it’s worth it: If you don't have the time (or patience) for an in-shower mask, consider a treatment that works while you sleep, like Crown Affair's Overnight Repair Serum. It's powered by Tsubaki Meadows—a lightweight, antioxidant-rich hydrating complex—as well as rosemary leaf extract, panthenol, and chia seed extract. The combination takes down frizz and boosts strength, softness, and shine while you sleep; since it dries down quickly, it won't transfer onto your pillow. Plus, the woody, citrusy scent adds some nice spa-day energy to your routine. Apply it to hair from your mid-lengths to ends—and if your hair is especially dry or thick, you can use it as a leave-in conditioner during the day, too.

“Crown Affair is one of my favorite hair-care brands, so when they added the Overnight Repair Serum to their lineup last summer I knew I needed to try it out. I'm a sucker for easy-to-use products, so the fact that I can put this in before I go to bed and not have to wash it out is what sold me on this. I have a lot of hair, so I use more than the one-to-two recommended pumps a couple of times a week. I've been using the serum since February and have increasingly gotten more compliments on the health of my hair, and I swear this is the reason why.” —Elizabeth Gulino, senior staff writer

Why it’s worth it: With curly hair, which is naturally dry, the name of the game is trapping in hydration and easing detangling—and here, Rizos Curls’ Gloss + Repair Mask is a winner. Hyaluronic acid draws in moisture, while mango butter seals it (adding shine and improving softness, too). This thick, creamy formula also provides lots of slip, making it easier to glide right through the knots and tangles that can lead to breakage and frizz. Also on the ingredient list are a hair-strengthening complex, which is designed to reduce breakage and seal split ends, and glycolic acid for shine and softness. Leave it on for at least five minutes, but if you’re in dryness SOS mode, you can wear it for up to two hours before rinsing.

“My hair is already dry, but in the summer, cue chlorine and high UV rays, and my curls are parched. A moisturizing hair mask becomes a need, not a want. This mask has continued to bring my hair back to life after long days in the sun, when my curls are feeling drier than usual. Oh, and the ‘gloss’ in its name means business. The shine afterward is undeniable. I truly have no complaints.” —Hailey Roy, commerce production assistant

Why it's worth it: "Olaplex No. 3 is a game-changer for damaged hair. It's a bond builder that repairs the broken disulfide bonds in your hair that cause damage from heat styling, coloring, and chemical treatments," explains hairstylist Angelo David, founder of Angelo David Salon in New York City. A generous slather of this formula on a damp 'do penetrates the hair shaft with reparative amino acids, restoring ionic bonds. "This can be used as a weekly at-home treatment to reduce breakage and visibly strengthen hair, or if hair is more damaged, two to three times a week," says colorist Christin Brown, who specializes in curly hair (and is an Olaplex global ambassador). The formula is lightweight but indulgent, and the results are as sleek as can be.

"The new formula immediately made my hair feel much softer—this could be due to the fact that I used more product the second time around, though. While I don’t think my hair necessarily felt stronger immediately, like the brand claims, I can see how using this more often can have a better effect. Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of using a hydrating hair treatment?

Here's the deal—extra moisture leads to healthy hair and softer strands. Mona Gohara, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Connecticut, highlights the power of humectants like hyaluronic acid (commonly found in skin care) in hair care. "It revives dry strands and restores softness in just one minute," she explains. "Just like your skin, your hair loses moisture daily—from heat styling, environmental stressors, and even washing. Without proper hydration, it becomes dry, brittle, and prone to breakage."

According to Emily Claire, a colorist and Davines educator at Rob Peetoom Salon in NYC, treatments typically fall into two categories. "The first is surface-level cosmetic treatments, like hair masks and leave-in conditioners, that offer temporary shine and softness. The second is bond-building reparative treatments, like K18 Leave-In Molecular Hair Mask and Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector, which work at the molecular level to repair serious damage," she explains. Still, whether the benefits are short-term or long-term, any hydrating hair treatment can be valuable.

How are hydrating hair treatments different from regular conditioners?

"A hair mask [for example] is very similar to a daily conditioner in that it restores the hydration of the hair after shampooing,” New Jersey-based hairstylist Michelle Cleveland told Allure. "However, a mask contains higher concentrations of vitamins, oils, and butters that will penetrate deeper into the hair when left on for longer periods of time than a traditional conditioner," she said. “The result is a higher level of hydration to the hair, which ultimately leads to repairing dry, damaged, and/or dehydrated hair.”

So, while you shouldn’t ditch your standard conditioner altogether—it’s an important part of regular maintenance—your hair will look and feel even more hydrated when paired with an intensive treatment buddy.

What is the best thing to rehydrate your hair?

To rehydrate your hair, Holland Hager, a colorist at Flore in Los Angeles, recommends starting with a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo. From there, “follow with a deep conditioning treatment, then finish by applying a lightweight hair oil or a leave-in conditioner to help lock in moisture and keep your hair soft,” she says.

How do I deeply hydrate my hair?

Say it with us: Condition, condition, condition. To get well-hydrated hair, Hager suggests applying a nourishing scalp oil before washing your hair, then using “a rich, moisturizing conditioner with every wash.” She also recommends using deep conditioning treatments twice a week “to restore moisture, improve softness, and support overall hair health.”

What is the best treatment for dry hair during menopause?

If menopause has left your hair drier, it’s likely time to make some changes in your routine—in more ways than one. Externally, it’s best to “limit heat styling to help prevent dryness and breakage,” says Hager; she also recommends sleeping with a silk or satin pillowcase or bonnet for the same purpose. Internally, “support healthy hair from within by eating adequate protein and talking with your healthcare provider about the supplements that are right for your individual needs,” she says.

How we test and review products

We always enlist a range of testers for our makeup vertical, but hair-care products and tools are another story. While there are certainly products that can be used across different hair textures, lengths, curl patterns, thicknesses, colors (natural and unnatural), and needs, hair products are often created with specific consumers in mind.

For our review of the best hydrating hair treatments, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and hair experts—many of whom want shinier, healthier-looking hair.

Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet..
